Osgoode Hall

Named after James Osgoode the first chief Justice of Upper Canada, Osgoode Hall sits on 6 acres and was constructed in 1829. It houses the Ontario Court of Appeal, The Superior Court of Justice and The Law Society of Upper Canada.

Cow Gate

This is a cow gate in the beautiful and ornate fence that surrounds Osgoode Hall. These gates were supposedly used to keep animals off the grounds. Some suggest they are purely ornamental. Either way they beg to be walk through.

The Lock

This is the entrance to our backyard pool. In Stouffville pool owners are, among other things, required to lock their gates.

Sunflowers

These sunflowers are located on Front Street in Toronto. I like the the way they have rusted.

Waiting for a Workout

These colourful kayaks and canoes were found at the Toronto waterfront early one morning. Shortly after I took this photo a couple of kayakers were out on the water.

Toronto City Hall

Toronto City Hall was designed by Viljo Revell and completed in 1965. The tower on the right is a height of 99.5 meters and the left tower is 79.4 meters high. The clam or flying saucer shaped building in the middle houses the council chambers. From the air it looks like an open eye.
Even after 40 years the building still looks modern.

These ballet slippers were found in the window of the Royal York Hotel, Toronto.

Star Magnolia

Our star magnolia is in full bloom right now which is a least 2 weeks earlier than normal.

Bicycle in the Garden

This bicycle sits in my neighbour's back garden. Maybe a bit unusual but thats why I like it.

Waterfront Condo

Along the waterfront in Toronto there are numerous condominiums. This one stands out because of its unusual colours.

Reflection

Pictured is the back of our house reflected in the water of the pool's winter cover. This weekend we removed the cover so measurements for a new pool liner could be made. We figured after 18 years it was time.

View From Above

We were in Toronto helping my son and his girlfriend move out of their apartment. I looked over their 18th floor balcony and saw these people on the patio of the restaurant below.
They were enjoying another nice spring day with lots of sun and warm temperatures.

CN Tower

Th CN Tower is one of the most recognizable structures in Toronto. It's 553.33 meters tall and weighs in at 130,000 tons about the same as 23,214 large elephants. It took nearly 40 months to complete. When in the downtown area views of the tower sneak up on you and make for some interesting photo opportunities.

Stairs

The stairs are actually a fire escape for the apartments above. The sign says no fire escape trespassing. Well, I tempted fate and stood on the steps. Nothing happened.

Silo

An abandoned silo with the remnants of an out building in a corn field unharvested from last fall. This is not a uncommon sight in our area, with the difficulties of making a living farming combined with the ever encroaching urban sprawl.

A Rare Gem

In these days of mega home centers Schell Lumber is a rare find. It has been a family business since 1928. They sell lumber and home building supplies - period -  no appliances, carpet or other such items. The building itself dates back to 1878. When you click on the photo and read the plaque you can see the building's history.

Looks Like Dinner

Well not really, I'm not a hunter. As I was driving to work this morning a deer and this wild turkey wandered across the road a couple of hundred meters in front of me. I knew the deer would disappear into the woods but the turkey strolled along the forest edge. Getting closer was out of the question because any sudden movement would send him running for cover and my previous experience with birds leaves me skittish (I may tell that story one day). If you click on the photo you will get a better view.

Checked Yours Lately

This sign was spotted at a local jewelry shop. I thought maybe they got into the psychology business.

Raindrops

Its been raining here the last couple of days so this shot seemed appropriate. The rain really helps to clean and green everything up. The trees are starting to bud and all the spring flowers are beginning to poke out of the ground.

Bear

"Bear " by E.B. Cox,1981 is located outside the old library in Stouffville.

Old Town Hall

Built in 1896 it started life as a market and concert hall but it has also been a movie theatre, bowling alley and billiard hall, garage and finally a town hall. The town vacated the premises about 10 years ago and it remained empty except for a few artists that rent some space.
Now it will be turned into an arts, cultural and entertainment centre with construction starting this month.

Crane

This crane stands tall in behind Hoover machine and welding shop. They have been around since 1951 and are one of the older businesses in town. Maybe the crane is of the same vintage.

Clock Tower

The clock tower was built in 1931 replacing a wooden hose tower that was part of a fire hall constructed at this location in 1889. In 1967 the fire hall was demolished leaving the clock tower as a defining feature of Stouffville.

Good barber. Great conversation. What else could I ask for.

Morning Run

Caught this person out for their morning run. Now that the nicer weather is here we see a lot more people out and about.
It was nice to run without all the winter gear on. Soon it will be shorts and t-shirt weather.

Tagged

Inside the railway overpass I posted yesterday was, of course, graffiti. While I don't agree with the whole graffiti scene the colours  here were quite a contrast to the gray and brown of the surrounding area.

But does Ness love Jess?

I came across this railway overpass after traveling along a muddy pot hole filled rural road the other day. There is only enough room for a single car to pass through. It's not in bad shape considering it was built in 1911 but some work might be in order.

Three of a kind

I found these water outlets (wall mounted fire hydrants) outside a condominium in Yorkville, an upscale neighbourhood in downtown Toronto. They are located on a plain gray concrete wall which made them stand out.

At Rest

Driving the back roads outside of town, I noticed this family cemetery in the hamlet of Glasgow. I thought it made an interesting photo.
