Actually this a male American Goldfinch rests on the fence after chasing away the competition while the female hid in the bushes.

Goldfinches may be small birds but they make up for it with bravado!
These are so different to our European goldfinces. Ken, this is by far my favourite photograph you have taken. The enlarged version is oustanding, faultless. I would have been proud to have take this.
Look at his little toes!
And I love that white stripe on his black wing.
