Milkweed

Soon these milkweed pods will burst sending fluff containing their seeds all about. I also found that they can be pickled and eaten, although, they won't be high on my must try list.

Wikipedia says that during World War II, over 11 million pounds of milkweed floss were collected in the United States as a substitute for kapok.
For life jackets I assume.
