When I grew up in England, all the buildings were totally black. What I didn't know was that they were black from the soot of the coal fires. I thought that was just how they were. It was the same in all big cities. It was many years after I left England, that I returned and saw them all cleaned up. I still can't get used to seeing the gold trim on Big Ben.
I've been making quick visits to your photos but have been having difficulty sitting at the computer for very long, so haven't commented.
